Ljubljana is the hometown of not only one, but two Grand Hotel Unions. The Grand Hotel Union Business is the modern extension of the old and traditional Art Nouveau building. Its central location is paired with comfortable and renovated rooms. As part of the Hotel Union is also the largest conference hall in Ljubljana and three fine dining restaurants.
Throughout the years, Grand Hotel Union Business hosted many important people, among which were Orson Welles, Bill Clinton, the Dalai Lama, and Queen Elizabeth.
The original building was opened in 1905 and its architectural design created the Art Nouveau style. The author of this century old building is Josip Vancaš, an acclaimed architect in this part of the world. At the time, this was the first modern hotel in Ljubljana, but also its tallest building. The 100 metres long façade and a complex iron roof considered to be a great architectural achievement and are still marveled upon by architects and students in Ljubljana. Hotel Union is located at the end of the Baroque part of Ljubljana where the more modern Art Nouveau style building begin. An important decision was made in 1979, when the Holliday Inn was built – the same building where Grand Hotel Union Business lives today. In the year 1977 a licence agreement was signed in Memphis, Tennessee to open a Holiday Inn hotel in Ljubljana. Edo Mihavec designed the building so that the hotel could offer six suites, 70 singles and 57 double rooms. Even at that time all rooms were air conditioned, but what was more important is that the Holliday Inn was the first hotel in Ljubljana to have a swimming pool, solarium, trim cabinet and a spacious hotel garage with 100 parking spaces.
Grand Hotel Union Business is a fairly large hotel with 127 rooms and six suites in the standard and superior categories available for the guests.
